This deliciously refreshing Anti-Inflammatory Strawberry Green Smoothie is full of greens to alkalize your body but still tasty enough to appeal to everyone. It gives your body plenty of nutrients and helps reduce inflammation. I make it for my weekend guests all summer long.

Strawberry Green Smoothie

Yay, for smoothies. These fruit and veggie-filled drinks are a great way to get an abundance of nutrients into your diet. Smoothies are also a tasty way to use the beautiful produce summer has to offer.

Having a smoothie for breakfast in the morning fills your body with vitamins, minerals, enzymes and hydration. Blending breaks down the cell walls of the green vegetables enabling the nutrients to be digested quickly and easily. The vitamins, minerals and enzymes are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and carried to your cells giving them the nutrition they need to perform their job optimally.  When your organs are working well you feel really good.

Strawberry Green SmoothieThis perfect smoothie contains protein, fat, fiber, and carbohydrates that keep your metabolism humming and blood sugar in balance.

A green banana instead of ripe banana provides resistant starch, a special type of starch that isn’t fully broken down or absorbed in your small intestine.  Resistant starch is a natural fat burner that stimulates blood flow to the colon, inhibits the growth of bad bacteria, and helps us absorb more minerals.  The only green bananas I could find were little ones.  Green plantains have resistant starch and are a good substitute, but I like the taste of bananas better.

The addition of beets helps thin the bile and cleanse the liver.  It gives the smoothie a beautiful pink color.

Adding greens to your smoothie is one of the best and quickest ways to reduce inflammation (the root cause of most chronic disease) while hydrating your body, drenching your cells in life-giving nutrients and even repairing your DNA. You get more energy, glowing skin, clear eyes, improved digestion and exceptional health and happiness. Greens rid your body of toxins, excess weight, sugar cravings, addictions and prevent premature aging.

Spinach, kale or any dark green leafy vegetables will do.   I like romaine because it is not goitrogenic which many of the dark leafy greens like kale and other cruciferous vegetables are.  Goitrogens are naturally-occurring substances that can interfere with function of the thyroid gland . If you have thyroid problems romaine is a good choice.

Romaine also has low levels of oxalic acid for people who are concerned with calcium oxalate or kidney stones. Romaine is also a complete protein! That means it has all 8 essential amino acids.

Flaxseed is a potent superfood. It has 3 major benefits.  First they are a great source of fiber, 2.8 grams per tablespoon. Fiber escorts the toxins out of the system by keeping our bowels regular.

Second, flaxseed is a good source of omega 3’s.  These essential fatty acids play an important role in keeping inflammation down.

Third, flax contains lignans which reduce the risk of breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men. The lignans alter the way your body metabolizes estrogens into safer forms. Two tablespoons a day has been shown to reduce hot flashes.

Strawberry Breakfast Smoothie

Don’t let all of this health information scare you off of the dessert like flavor of this smoothie.  There is nothing better than spending summer weekends with friends, having a little wine with a delicious dinner out on the porch.  Then bring your body back into balance with this Anti-Inflammatory Strawberry Green Smoothie in the morning.  A fantastic experience for your body, mind and soul.
