By January 28, 2012September 10th, 2012Nutrition Information

I love the cooking classes which I took a number of while  in Kerala. Here in Southern India they use some form of coconut in almost all the food.  They consider it a miracle food  I think they are right

Coconuts are seen by some as a miracle food, helping protect and cure the body of internal and external ailments. Coconut milk has many uses, most of which build up the immune system and the body’s defenses.  Coconut oil is high in nutrients and fiber.  It does not break down when heated making it the perfect oil for cooking.  Coconut water is full of minerals and electrolytes.

Benefits of Coconut:

Helps Control Weight

The saturated fat in coconut is made up of short-chain and medium-chain fatty acids the body quickly turns into energy instead of storing as fat. The MCFAs (medium chain fatty acids) are digested and utilized differently than most fats. They do not circulate the bloodstream like other fats, but instead go directly to the liver where they are converted into energy. They help control blood sugar and are not stored as fat. Coconut oil consumption ultimately leads to a reduction in fatty deposits and weight reduction. Coconut milk also makes you feel full very quickly because of high concentrations of dietary fiber. It is very satisfying.

Helps Maintain A Healthy Immune System

Lauric acid is a substance found only in breast milk and coconut. It is a potent ant-microbial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral agent that can either kill or disrupt the growth of many viruses and bacteria. It is a potent anti-oxidant.

Beneficial For Your Thyroid

Coconut oil has been shown to restore thyroid function, resulting in lean tissue and increased energy. This, in turn, has a positive effect on your metabolic rate.

Improves the Function of the Nervous System

Since our brain if made up primarily of fat and coconut oil appears to double the body’s ability to use antioxidant omega-3 fatty acids. Taking your omega-3s (especially the plant sources like flax and chia) with coconut oil will boost the benefits of the essential fatty acids

Beneficial Skin Conditioner

The saturated fat in coconut oil is very helpful in rejuvenating oxidative tissue-damaged caused by aging. It gently relieves dry skin and rashes and can be used to restore moisture to your hair.
