Jamu juice is a traditional Indonesian herbal drink that helps reduce inflammation and keeps your body in balance. Easy to make with fresh turmeric, ginger, lemon, water, and a little bit of honey. This recipe is enough for 2-3 days. You can easily double it but I prefer to make it fresh.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup sliced fresh turmeric
  • 1” piece of fresh ginger, sliced (add more if you like it spicy)
  • 2 cups filtered water
  • 2 Tablespoons lemon or lime juice to taste
  • 1 Tablespoons honey, to taste
  • pinch of black pepper (optional)

Optional Ingredients

  • 1 Tablespoon Tamarind
  • 1 stalk lemongrass, bottom part only

Instructions

  1. Wash and slice the turmeric and ginger into thin disks. You can leave the skin on.
  2. Add turmeric, ginger, water and black pepper (if using) to a blender. Blend on high speed until smooth about 1 minute. If you don’t have a blender you can grate the turmeric and ginger.
  3. Pour into a pot and bring to a boil. Simmer for 20 minutes to develop the flavors. Remove from the heat. Add lemon and honey, stir.
  4. Use a fine strainer, nut milk bag or cheesecloth to strain the mixture. Serve in a glass or shot glass. Store in a glass bottle for up to 5 days. Enjoy chilled or warm.

Notes

BE CAREFUL. Cut turmeric stains everything it touches. That includes your hands and the counter. If you get it on the counter, wipe it up immediately. Wash your blender out immediately to prevent staining. Use gloves to prevent your fingers from getting stained.
