Here thick slices of tofu are marinated in a flavorful ginger, garlic, soy marinade, then grilled until golden and charred. This recipe is quick to make but you need at least 3 hours to marinate the tofu.  Overnight is even better so plan ahead.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1(14-ounce) block extra-firm tofu, sliced crosswise into eight equal slices (about ½-inch)
  • 2 Tablespoons avocado oil, plus more for greasing grates
  • 2 Tablespoons minced garlic
  • 1 Tablespoon minced fresh ginger
  • 1/4 cup gluten free tamari or soy sauce
  • 2 Tablespoons coconut sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 Tablespoons thinly sliced scallions

Instructions

  1. Arrange sliced tofu in a single layer on half of a clean kitchen towel. Cover with the other half of the towel to remove excess water. Put a board on top to let it press while you make the marinade (see notes above on pressing tofu).
  2. In a small saute pan, combine oil, garlic and ginger over medium; Saute, stirring frequently, until softened and fragrant, 2 minutes.
  3. Add tamari, coconut sugar, pepper and 1/4 cup water, and cook, stirring to dissolve the sugar, about 2 minutes.
  4. Arrange tofu in a shallow dish that can hold the tofu in one layer.
  5. Pour hot marinade over tofu. Gently turn tofu slices to evenly coat, then cover dish tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 3 hours or overnight, (see notes above) flipping tofu slices halfway through.
  6. Heat grill to medium/high and grease grates well (or heat a cast-iron grill pan over medium and lightly grease). You want the grill to be hot.
  7. Wipe off extra marinade. Grill tofu over direct heat until golden and caramelized, about 4 minutes per side.
  8. While the tofu is cooking, transfer marinade to a small saute pan, simmer on medium, 1 to 2 minutes to thicken slightly. Stir in scallions.
  9. Transfer tofu to a serving plate and spoon over the sauce. Serve warm, at room temperature, or cold.
