This healthy, rich and creamy Alkaline Green Smoothie is a great way to start your day. It’s packed full of hydrating green vegetables with just right amount of sweetness. Since it helps reduce the acids that naturally build up in your body overnight, you’ll have more energy, less inflammation and better health.
What is an alkaline smoothie?
An alkaline smoothie has a high pH level which helps keep our body in balance. This smoothie also provides relief from acid reflux and heartburn.
Our body regularly deals with naturally occurring acids that are by products of respiration, metabolism, cellular breakdown, and exercise.
One of the biggest problems for us women over 50 is, if we become too acidic, our body mines calcium from our bones and teeth to neutralize the acids. That’s not good, we want strong bones.
Eating a more alkaline diet has many benefits including:
- keeping our bones and muscles strong,
- improving cardiovascular health and brain function,
- maintaining our natural weight,
- preventing kidney stones,
- deeper sleep,
- increased energy,
- healthier tissues
- prevention of chronic diseases.
Green vegetables provide the highest quantity of alkaline minerals that help our blood maintain its ideal pH.
A green smoothie consumed in the morning on an empty stomach enables you to alkalize the acids that tend to build up in your system. It also gives you energy. High fiber to keep your pipes flowing is also one of the outstanding benefits of this alkaline smoothie.
TIP: I love coffee which is quite acidic. I have discovered, much to my delight, the acids in coffee don’t bother me and I feel better all day when I drink an alkaline green smoothie BEFORE my coffee.
Ingredients and Substitutions
I believe food should taste good and make us feel good too. This smoothie tastes great. It’s the perfect combination of greens, fibre, protein and fats to keep you happy and satisfied from breakfast until lunch. It’s the ultimate green smoothie for anyone looking for a cleansing refreshing breakfast.
Here are the ingredients you need :
Spinach – Spinach is a high alkaline food that is known to benefit bone health because of the calcium it contains. Kale can be substituted but will have a stronger taste.
Celery – In addition to being alkalizing, celery has cleansing properties. Since it’s mostly water, celery can easily help the body flush toxins. Read about the benefits of celery here.
Apples – Apples give the smoothie a sweet taste and are low glycemic. They are rich in detoxifying fiber and antioxidants such as vitamin C and flavonoids. The skin contains the most nutrients, get organic apples and leave the skin on. Banana or kiwi can be substituted.
Lemons – Even though lemons are acidic in nature, it has an alkalizing effect in our body. Leave the peel on the lemon if it’s organic. It contains 5-10 times more vitamins than the lemon juice by itself. I love that lemon peel has calcium which is good for our bones. Read more about the benefits of lemon peel here.
Cucumber – Cucumber is high in alkaline magnesium, calcium, plus vitamin K1 all really good for bone health. They contain phytonutrients that provide anti-inflammatory, antioxidant benefits. Get organic and leave the skin on.
Avocado – In addition to being highly nutritious avocados radically increase the nutrient value of the other vegetables. The vitamins A, D, E and K, along with antioxidants are “fat soluble,” meaning that they need to be combined with fat in order to be assimilated. Avocados make the smoothie creamy and more satisfying.
Parsley – Parsley is a highly alkalizing food that’s also excellent at cleansing the kidneys and assisting with digestion.
Ice Water – Helps make the smoothie nice and cold and adds thickness when blended. Almond milk and ice and be used for a creamier taste.
How to Make The Smoothie
- Add the ingredients to a high speed blender.
- Pulse to get the blending started.
- Blend until smooth. Add more water if desired.
- Pour into 2 glasses and serve.
Tip: If you have a regular household blender add the spinach and parsley first. Blend with the ice water. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend until smooth.
How do I store leftovers?
It’s best to drink the smoothie right away to get the maximum amount of nutrients. If you store it, refrigerate it in a glass jar filled to the top so there is less air touching the smoothie.
Is this alkaline green smoothie good for weight loss?
Green smoothies are packed with nutrients and fiber which help keep you full and satisfied throughout the day making them a great choice if you’re trying to lose weight. In addition, green smoothies can help boost your metabolism and promote fat loss. Good pH balance helps with weight loss because it improves your overall health.
