Alkaline Green Smoothie

This healthy, rich and creamy Alkaline Green Smoothie is a great way to start your day. It’s packed full of hydrating green vegetables with just right amount of sweetness. What is an alkaline smoothie?

One of the biggest problems for us women over 50 is, if we become too acidic, our body mines calcium from our bones and teeth to neutralize the acids. That’s not good, we want strong bones.

TIP: I love coffee which is quite acidic. I have discovered, much to my delight, the acids in coffee don’t bother me and I feel better all day when I drink an alkaline green smoothie BEFORE my coffee.

I believe food should taste good and make us feel good too. This smoothie tastes great. It’s the perfect combination of greens, fibre, protein and fats to keep you happy and satisfied from breakfast until lunch. It’s the ultimate green smoothie for anyone looking for a cleansing refreshing breakfast.

Here are the ingredients you need :

Spinach – Spinach is a high alkaline food that is known to benefit bone health because of the calcium it contains. Kale can be substituted but will have a stronger taste.

Celery – In addition to being alkalizing, celery has cleansing properties. Since itโ€™s mostly water, celery can easily help the body flush toxins. Read about the benefits of celery here.

Apples – Apples give the smoothie a sweet taste and are low glycemic. They are rich in detoxifying fiber and antioxidants such as vitamin C and flavonoids. The skin contains the most nutrients, get organic apples and leave the skin on. Banana or kiwi can be substituted.

Lemons – Even though lemons are acidic in nature, it has an alkalizing effect in our body. Leave the peel on the lemon if itโ€™s organic. Cucumber – Cucumber is high in alkaline magnesium, calcium, plus vitamin K1 all really good for bone health. They contain phytonutrients that provide anti-inflammatory, antioxidant benefits. Get organic and leave the skin on.

Avocado – In addition to being highly nutritious avocados radically increase the nutrient value of the other vegetables. The vitamins A, D, E and K, along with antioxidants are โ€œfat soluble,โ€ meaning that they need to be combined with fat in order to be assimilated. Avocados make the smoothie creamy and more satisfying.

Parsley – Parsley is a highly alkalizing food that’s also excellent at cleansing the kidneys and assisting with digestion.

Collagen or Hemp – The addition of collagen or hemp increases the protein in this smoothie. Protein makes you feel full longer and boosts your metabolism. Chia or flax seeds can be substituted.

Ice Water – Helps make the smoothie nice and cold and adds thickness when blended. Almond milk and ice and be used for a creamier taste.

How to Make The Smoothie

  • Add the ingredients to a high speed blender.
  • Pulse to get the blending started.
  • Blend until smooth. Add more water if desired.
  • Pour into 2 glasses and serve.

Tip: If you have a regular household blender add the spinach and parsley first. Blend with the ice water. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend until smooth.

It’s best to drink the smoothie right away to get the maximum amount of nutrients. If you store it, refrigerate it in a glass jar filled to the top so there is less air touching the smoothie.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 3/4 cup organic cucumber, unpeeled, cut into chunks
  • 1 cup ice water
  • 1/2 cup celery, sliced
  • 1/2 organic lemon, unpeeled, cut into chunks
  • 1/2 small avocado, cut into chunks
  • 1 small handful of parsley
  • 1/21 organic apple, unpeeled, cut into chunks (more apple makes it sweeter)
  • 2 scoops collagen or hemp protein

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to a high speed blender.*ย 
  2. Pulse a few times to get everything mixed.
  3. Blend on high for 20-30 seconds until smooth.
  4. Add more water if you want it thinner.ย

If using a traditional home blender:
*Blend leafy greens and ice water until smooth.
*Add remaining ingredients and blend until smooth.
